"The meetings every month are very enjoyable as we all forget our problems. It's good fun listening to all the chit chat about all the experiences and fun times we had growing up."
Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s/Dementia can be very stressful, isolating and demanding.
Peer support is a source of valuable emotional support. Carers want to know that they are not alone and to get practical advice from others who are in the same situation. This group provides an informal environment where carers can discuss issues affecting them and seek advice and support from others who are in the same situation. On occasions various professionals will be invited to present on condition specific topics, along with general information sessions on other areas of interest, games activities and outings, all over a cuppa and biscuit.
The aim of the group is to provide carers with a level of personal peer support, information on services, how other carers accessed these, deemed them appropriate to their needs, as well as a much needed respite from your role as a carer by having fun and feeling more confident and comfortable.
The group is support by Duncan, the group worker from Renfrewshire Carers and a Dementia Advisor (normally Fiona). The group meets in the Norcroft Medical Centre, 1-3pm, on the 1st Thursday of every month.
"I hope that my experience of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease may be of help to others in a similar situation."
"When I come to the meetings I like to hear everybody's views on various subjects. Everyone is so friendly. They make you feel you are NOT ALONE"
"Although not now in a caring role I still enjoy coming to the meetings as we all feel part of a family group and hope I can be of help if possible."
