Young adult carers are the unheralded heroes of the UK. Approx 250,000 young adult carers provide an average of 20 hours unpaid care per week totalling an estimated 60-70million pounds worth of unpaid care.
Renfrewshire Young Adult Carers aim to support these fantastic individuals, who quite often face particular barriers and challenges during this transition into adulthood. ‘At a time when others their age are leaving school and making plans for employment, training and education, young adult carers often have to deal with demands, responsibilities and emotions that limit their future opportunities’ (Scottish Government, 2010)
We aim to work with various services within Renfrewshire in order to provide help to access the training experiences they require, including: Support to access further education, assistance with job applications or interviews, build a comprehensive CV and obtain voluntary or paid employment. Support young people to get a bank account, obtain relevant benefits available to them, increase awareness of the benefits of the credit union and also offer individual support dependent on individuals needs in terms of financial problems or worries. However, the development of the project and the support on offer will be led, largely by the young adult carers themselves. *
A weekly/fortnightly group for young adult carers (18-24yrs) will be beginning soon with the aim of increasing peer support, friendships and social activities so watch this space!
If you think you or someone you know are a young adult carer and would like to join the group, get more information, or even just chat about how we could help, please contact Gavin on 0141 847 1937, text: 07528679343. Or use our contact form:
